Barrel Spiders more closely resemble hermit crabs than an actual spider. When formed, these creatures have no covering for their very soft and mushy body. They take refuge in small, dark places. For some reason, they seem to be very fond of barrels, and are almost always seen sporting them like armor. These are very strong and very quick enemies, and often have a rather short temper. They are known to explode at the smallest sign of harm or the least provocation.

Barrel Spiders hit fast and hard. Those in the Mouth and Interior should be handled very differently.
Mouth[]
If fought alone, the Spider should be handled with care, picking it down slowly while maintaining your health. It's best to focus on keeping yourself alive while picking off small bits of health whenever possible. Its low defensive stats make it very easy to have high defensive stats to combat it while still being able to deal considerable damage to it.
If fought in the Bile Pool with a Mandragora, the best strategy, as agreed upon by many advanced players, is to gain double turns off of the Mandragora similarly to the Barrel Spider so that he does not run around you. In this situation, it is generally better to blitz the Barrel Spider, taking it out as quickly and efficiently as possible. Magick is generally chosen, as it gives better chances to recover from the inevitable beatings you will incur from the monster's Handaxe.
Interior[]
Inside of Monstro, you'll want to take down the Barrel Spiders quickly and efficiently. If left alone for too long, they may Self Destruct dealing more damage than you'd expect. If they come to this final solution, however, and you manage to survive the onslaught, breathe a sigh of relief as the Barrel Spider will be completely de-commissioned.
Another way to handle them is to simply let them alone, knowing they'll eventually explode on you. In this way, you'd plan for its explosion and take preparatory measures against being completely decimated by it in the way of a decent Spirit stat. With a high enough Spirit, the explosion of the Barrel Spiders becomes naught more than an easily shrugged off nuisance rather than a massively dangerous assault.

- Many people are caught by surprise by the Exploding Barrel Spiders once they go within Monstro. Not all of them live to tell the tale.
